Young Lovers

Starting this Thursday (3), the new schedule at Cine Líbero Luxardo, located in Belém, will feature two European films directed by women: the features "Young Lovers" by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and "A Piece of Me" directed by Anne-Sophie Bailly. In addition to the Brazilian feature directed by Marcos Pimentel, "The Silence of the Oysters". The films will be showing until next Wednesday (10).

Selected for the official competition of the Cannes Film Festival and nominated for seven César awards, the French drama "Young Lovers" (Les Amandiers) is directed by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, who draws inspiration from her own experiences to portray youth, artistic effervescence, and the challenges of growing up.

Young Lovers

Set in the late 1980s, the film follows a group of young people admitted to Les Amandiers, a prestigious theater school on the outskirts of Paris. There, amidst drama classes and the fascination with the stage, the students experience first loves, discoveries, anxieties, and losses, diving deeply into the emotions and contradictions of early adulthood.

Semi-autobiographical, the feature is based on Tedeschi's experiences and those of her peers at the time. "Young Lovers" also stands out as one of the few productions directed by women selected for the main showcase of the Cannes Film Festival in its edition. Among the recognitions it received, it highlights the César Award for Best Promising Actress for Nadia Tereszkiewicz.

A Piece of Me

"A Piece of Me", starring Laure Calamy, also hits the big screen

Another highlight of the week is the drama "A Piece of Me", the first feature film by French director Anne-Sophie Bailly. Shown at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, the film was part of the Orizzonti section, one of the most prestigious competitive sections of the event.

Starring Laure Calamy, winner of the César for Best Actress in 2021 for "My Holidays with Patrick", the film follows Mona, a divorced woman living with her son Joël, a neurodivergent young adult. The relationship between the two, marked by affection and complicity, comes into crisis when Mona discovers that Joël's girlfriend, also neurodivergent, is pregnant.

In addition to Calamy, the cast includes young actors Charles Peccia Galletto and Julie Froger, both neurodivergent actors selected by the director after a long casting search. Throughout the film, the young actors deliver sensitive performances that have been highly praised by international critics.

Silence of the Oysters

Double feature of "The Silence of the Oysters".

The first fiction feature by award-winning documentarian Marcos Pimentel, "The Silence of the Oysters" premiered in June, addressing human losses and environmental tragedies in Minas Gerais. Starring Bárbara Colen and Lavínia Castelari, the film was a highlight at the 26th edition of the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival.

Combining fictional narrative and real images of the environmental disasters that occurred in the mining towns of Mariana and Brumadinho, the feature follows the journey of Kaylane, a young woman raised in a workers' village of a mining company. After a series of losses, she struggles to survive and resist amidst the mud, dust, and silence that surrounds her.

The work is moving for the sensitivity with which it portrays the impacts of mining on small communities, questioning the boundaries between fiction and reality.
