With over 2,500 surgeries, HRPL's Surgical Center stands out in quality
In Paragominas, the unit plays a vital role in providing medium and high complexity services with quality and proximity to the population
The Regional Public Hospital of the East (HRPL), in Paragominas, plays a fundamental role in strengthening the Unified Health System (SUS) in the interior of Pará by offering medium and high complexity services with quality and proximity to the population. Only in the first half of 2025, the unit performed 2,501 surgeries, reflecting its relevance in expanding access to specialized procedures and reducing the need for travel to distant urban centers.
Lucas Santos Negrão, nursing coordinator of the Surgical Center and CME of the Regional Hospital of the East, explains that the Surgical Center of the Regional Hospital of the East of Pará has been developing work based on excellence in patient care, humanization in service, and surgical safety, consolidating itself as a reference in good care practices in the region.
“Our surgical process begins with the map meeting held the day before, together with all the units involved, allowing for team alignment and organization of procedures, which directly contributes to reducing cancellations and increasing scheduling safety,” he pointed out.
The manager adds that, for each procedure, a Safe Surgery Protocol is implemented that includes:
• Correct identification of the patient;
• Confirmation of the procedure and location of the surgery;
• Checking of materials and equipment;
• Verification of allergies and specific risks of the patient;
• Recording and confirmation of counts of sponges and instruments;
• Effective communication among team members before, during, and after the procedure.
Lucas Santos Negrão also highlights that among the implemented actions are the monitoring of the surgical site infection prevention bundle, maintaining a surgical cancellation rate below the average of 3.83%, below the considerable acceptable (5%), and performing about 458 procedures per month. In addition, the partnership with the Central Material and Sterilization (CME) resulted in the creation of a catalog of Orthoses, Prostheses, and Special Materials (OPME), promoting standardization and safety. “Monthly team meetings and the effective application of the Systematization of Perioperative Nursing Care (SAEP) also reinforce the unit's commitment to continuous improvement and comprehensive patient care,” he concluded.
The hospital's care director, Karla Negrão, emphasizes that “maintaining an average surgical cancellation rate of only 3.83% positions the Surgical Center of the Regional Hospital of the East of Pará above most national and international benchmarks. This result reinforces a significant differential of the unit, reflecting the effectiveness of planning, communication, and surgical safety policies, factors that, strategically integrated, still have the potential to further reduce this rate,” she stressed.
Approval - At 32 years old, Maria Gonçalves was admitted to the Regional Hospital of the East to undergo gallbladder surgery (cholecystectomy) and shared her positive experience as a user of the Surgical Center.
“I was very well received. The service is excellent, and all the professionals treated me with respect and care. This made all the difference. I am satisfied and feel safe with the care I received,” said the patient.
Data - HRPL reached the mark of 163,145 attendances and procedures performed in the first half of 2025.
