Operation in Soure

The noise pollution caused by the use of free exhausts on motorcycles is a traffic violation provided for in the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB), as it causes disturbance of peace. To curb this practice, the State Traffic Department (Detran) is in the Marajó region conducting operations to inspect irregular motorcycles. So far, the actions are taking place in Soure and Portel, where Detran is working in partnership with the State Public Ministry, the author of the request.

According to the CTB, driving a motorcycle with a free exhaust, that is, without a muffler or with a defective part, is a serious infraction, subject to a fine of R$ 195.23, loss of five points on the National Driver's License (CNH), and retention of the vehicle for regularization. When the muffler system of the exhaust is absent, defective, deficient, or inoperative, it tends to emit noise above the permitted levels, causing disturbances to the population.

In the first action carried out in Soure, at least 8 vehicles were seized for various irregularities and 18 exhausts were destroyed in a joint action by Detran and the Military Police. The manager of the Regional Traffic Circumscription (Ciretran) of Soure, Bianor Souza, explains that the population of the municipality has been suffering from the excessive noise caused by tampered exhausts.

"The focus of the action was to remove the irregular exhaust from circulation, considering the many complaints from residents. During the approach, the inspection advises the driver to remove the equipment right on the spot, and then the vehicle is released," explains Souza. Other similar operations are expected to occur later this year in the city.

In Portel, another operation has been taking place since the beginning of the month with the aim of curbing this infraction. So far, 17 noisy exhausts have already been seized, but the number is expected to increase by the end of September.

The Detran inspection agent, Ari Neto, is monitoring the operation and explains that municipal authorities have informed about the attention and care to avoid traffic accidents. "In addition to the disturbance, the motorcycles are getting involved in accidents, posing a danger to road safety," he emphasizes.

To assist in the regularization of vehicles in Portel, Detran will carry out a traveling action in the municipality later this month, during which drivers will be able to ask questions and resolve irregularities or pending issues in the fleet.

Detran advises motorcycle drivers to always check if the vehicle's muffler is in perfect working condition and to never remove the equipment to avoid penalties.
