The State Secretariat for Public Security and Social Defense (Segup) held another preparatory training on Wednesday (24) as part of Operation “Curupira Mirim”. Merchants and representatives of the tourism network in Soure, a municipality in the Marajó Archipelago, participated in the action, carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) to prevent sexual exploitation and the trafficking of children and adolescents.

Since the beginning of September, the Operation has already passed through Castanhal, Belém (including the islands of Mosqueiro and Combu), Marituba, and Ananindeua. In Soure, about 90 participants were trained, including bar and restaurant owners and members of the local hotel network. The action mobilizes federal, state, and municipal agencies and prepares the local community for the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held in November in the capital of Pará.

Secretary Ualame Machado emphasized the strengthening of the child protection network

Protection network - The State Secretary for Public Security and Social Defense, Ualame Machado, reinforced that the training aims to strengthen a protection network with establishment owners. “Operation 'Curupira Mirim' protects our children and adolescents, rescuing the symbol of COP30, which is the Curupira, and strengthening child protection. The Operation has already passed through the Metropolitan Region of Belém and the islands, and now it arrives in Eastern Marajó to train and consolidate this protection network in the State,” informed the head of Segup.

The Operation, coordinated by the Directorate of Public Security Policies and Social Prevention (DPS) of Segup, involved the participation of other agencies, such as the state secretariats of Social Assistance, Labor, Employment and Income (Seaster) and Tourism (Setur), ParáPaz Foundation, Public Ministry, Ministry of Tourism, and the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB). Topics such as responsible tourism, Brazil's Code of Conduct, good practices for bars and hotels, reception and referral of victims, identification of signs of sexual violence, and prevention of related crimes were addressed.

Delegate Ariane Santos: 'the goal is to provide information'

Social awareness - Delegate Ariane Santos, head of the DPS, highlighted the role of merchants in protecting children and adolescents. According to her, “this awareness and the exchange of information are essential for them to actively participate in combating child sexual exploitation. The goal is to provide information and reaffirm the commitment of the actions of the Committee for Combating Sexual Crimes against Children and Adolescents in Pará, especially in the context of COP30, keeping children and adolescents as an absolute priority.”

Rosely Coroa, a technician from Setur and a local agent of Responsible Tourism in Pará, emphasized the importance of the action in the Marajó Archipelago, one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the State. “The Operation seeks to prevent, inform, mobilize, and call society to take on the commitment to protect children and adolescents, ensuring rights responsibly, aligned with the axes of Sustainable/Responsible Tourism,” said the Setur technician.

For tourism expert and president of the Soure Tourism Association, Dileane Silva, the training was productive and strategic, involving the hotel network that, from this action, will begin to multiply the topics addressed. For her, “the topic is of utmost importance for our island, as we can only help combat this reality with clarification and knowledge of the cause, exactly what was offered to us today.”

On Thursday (25), Operation “Curupira Mirim” continues to Salvaterra, also in Marajó, expanding qualification and dissemination of information for the prevention and confrontation of sexual exploitation and trafficking of children and adolescents.
