The Gaspar Vianna Clinical Hospital (HC), in Belém, is already recognized as a pioneer in the implementation of Patient Blood Management (PBM) in the Northern region, with actions underway since 2023. This leadership was reinforced when HC was invited by the Hemopa Foundation to present strategies and challenges at a scientific event on sustainable hemotherapy.

The meeting, held in a hybrid format, brought together specialists from various states and aimed to train multidisciplinary teams on the principles and practices of PBM, as well as to develop guidelines for the rational use of blood in the context of hemotherapy.

Doctor Iê Fernandes: valuing the rational use of blood

For hematologist Iê Bentes Fernandes, head of the Transfusion Agency at HC, the invitation reaffirms the relevance of the institution's work. “Implementing PBM is a challenging but essential path. Everyone benefits: the patient, the hospital, the healthcare teams, the blood bank, and society. It is an ethical movement, based on evidence, that reduces complications, improves the quality of care, and values the rational use of blood,” she stated.

Benefits - PBM is a multidisciplinary approach that seeks to optimize the use of the patient's own blood, reducing dependence on transfusions and valuing their blood as a precious resource. Among its benefits are reduced mortality, shorter hospital stays, fewer postoperative complications, better quality of life for patients, and savings for the healthcare system.

HC's leadership will also be reinforced on the national stage. At the end of October, the Transfusion Agency team will represent the institution at the Brazilian Congress of Hematology, Hemotherapy, and Cellular Therapy – HEMO 2025, presenting three scientific papers, including the experience of implementing PBM at Hospital C.

With its active participation in scientific events and ongoing local implementation work, HC reaffirms its commitment to innovation, safety, and excellence in care, establishing itself as a reference in the Northern region.
