Pará reinforces environmental leadership at event on ocean-based climate solutions
Through Semas, the state participated in an event with representatives from state and municipal governments, international experts, and financial institutions
The Government of Pará, through the State Secretariat for the Environment, Climate and Sustainability (Semas), was present at the event "Ocean-Based Climate Solutions: Subnational Governments at the Forefront of Implementation," held this week at the AquaRio aquarium in Rio de Janeiro. The meeting brought together representatives from state and municipal governments, international experts, and financial institutions to discuss the strategic role of subnational entities in the ocean-climate agenda.
The Deputy Secretary for Environmental Management and Regularity of Semas, Rodolpho Zahluth Bastos, participated in the opening panel, speaking about the actions of the Government of Pará in addressing the climate crisis and implementing nature-based solutions that also involve coastal and marine ecosystems.
During the ceremony, representatives from Brazilian states and municipalities, including Pará, signed the Commitment Letter of Subnational Governments with Ocean-Based Climate Solutions, a document that reinforces the engagement of federative entities with policies aimed at the protection and restoration of coastal ecosystems, increasing the resilience of communities, and integrating local actions with global climate and biodiversity goals.
“Pará has been working in an integrated manner to strengthen national climate and environmental governance, with actions that unite mitigation, adaptation, and conservation. The signing of this letter symbolizes our commitment to broaden the perspective on oceans and their connections with the rivers and mangroves of the Amazon,” highlighted the deputy secretary.
The event was organized by the Special Envoy for the Ocean of COP30 and the Brazilian Association of State Environmental Entities (Abema), with support from institutions such as WWF-Brasil, Rare Brasil, Mission Blue, and Bloomberg Philanthropies. The initiative is part of the Blue Movement of COP30, an international mobilization movement, with the delivery of the commitment letter signed by subnational governments to the Presidency of COP 30, to strengthen the ocean-climate agenda, on the path to the United Nations Climate Change Conference, which will be held in Belém this month.
