Waldemar Henrique Theater hosts workshop on indigenous literacy in the context of the Amazon
The activity is part of the COP Central program, an initiative of the Climate Observatory, which offers free events until November 21 at the theater
The Waldemar Henrique Theater, in Belém, hosted the workshop "Indigenous Literacy in the Context of the Amazon: Ancestral Knowledge and Nature Preservation" on the afternoon of this Wednesday (12). Led by Aiyra Amana Tupinambá, the activity addressed themes such as orality, graphic designs, and ancestral narratives, aiming to value the voices of indigenous peoples and their relationship with the Amazon rainforest.
During the workshop, Aiyra emphasized the importance of creating spaces for dialogue and listening among different cultures. "Events like this are of unparalleled importance for indigenous peoples, as they allow us to engage in dialogue within our ancestral culture. Talking about literacy with non-indigenous society is also a form of meeting - to reconnect with relatives, to welcome those seeking to understand their origins or those wishing to get closer to the culture of indigenous peoples. When we have this opportunity to speak, we also give voice to those who came before us and did not have this chance," said Aiyra Tupinambá.
Among the participants was diplomat Sanny Araújo, who is in Belém for activities related to COP30 and decided to attend the workshop on the recommendation of friends. She highlighted the emotional and cultural impact of the experience. "I was impressed by the plurality of the meeting, by the open and welcoming way in which the peoples treat each other. When they call us 'relative', it touches deeply - it is a gesture that makes us feel part of the same people, even in diversity. I leave here wanting to come back again," she said.
The workshop is part of the COP Central program, an initiative of the Climate Observatory that seeks to bring society closer to discussions about climate change during COP30. Until November 21, the Waldemar Henrique Theater will host a series of free activities, including workshops, cultural presentations, and debates on the environment and sustainability. The complete program can be accessed here.
About COP Central
Created by the Climate Observatory, COP Central was born in 2024 with the aim of democratizing access to information about the climate conference. The project started as a portal with language inspired by football, offering news and columns on the subject. In 2025, the initiative expanded to in-person actions, including events, distribution of educational materials, debate programs, and the "Central Station of COP" campaign, which delivered about 2,000 boxes with informative content to communities across the country.
The activities carried out during COP30 mark the end of this cycle. About the Climate Observatory Founded in 2002, the Climate Observatory (OC) is the main network of Brazilian civil society dedicated to the climate agenda. It brings together 161 organizations, including NGOs, research institutes, and social movements, with the aim of contributing to a decarbonized, just, and sustainable Brazil. Since 2013, OC has published the SEEG, an annual estimate of greenhouse gas emissions in the country.
