CIIR users were able to watch the movie "I Am Still Here" through audio description

On Tuesday (23), the government of Pará, through the Secretary of Racial Equality and Human Rights (Seirdh), in partnership with the Integrated Center for Inclusion and Rehabilitation (CIIR), held a program in honor of Audio Description Cinema Week, at the CIIR auditorium in Belém.

The session, aimed at blind and low-vision individuals served by the rehabilitation center, screened the film “I Am Still Here,” directed by Walter Salles. The Brazilian production, winner of the Oscar for Best International Film, promoted a deep reflection on the military dictatorship and highlighted the importance of resistance and the preservation of democracy.

According to Jacinete Teixeira, manager of the Rights Promotion of Persons with Disabilities at Seirdh, to promote accessibility, it is necessary to think about service possibilities that include culture and leisure. “We know that there is a difficulty in accessing culture for people with disabilities. So, we thought about this partnership to enable those who are already served by CIIR to have this moment, because we understand that this opportunity is culture, leisure, and social inclusion,” she emphasized.

“Bringing more inclusion to our audience through a movie is something very pleasurable. We provide an opportunity for them to participate actively in our culture and society,” highlighted CIIR's pedagogical coordinator, Luciana Maués.

Accessibility

Audio description is a resource that translates images into words, allowing people with visual disabilities to understand audiovisual content. And it was with the help of this resource that user Luiz Otávio Silva, 74, was finally able to have the complete experience of the film. He shares that he has always wanted to see the work, but due to low vision and the lack of accessibility in cinemas, he had not had that opportunity yet. “I wanted to see the movie, but since I have low vision, I need someone by my side. Unfortunately, not all cinemas are adapted, so I don’t go. Sometimes, I go just to listen. But today, I fulfilled my wish to watch this movie,” he stated.
